Default Speedometer Display

The speedometer, fuel gauge and trip monitor of my '91 has developed areas that do not turn from orange (background color) to black ("lit" color). Some numbers/symbols turn grey instead of black, while others are grey when they should be orange.

For example:
1. The fuel gage "E" is black, the mid-point gas pump icon is grey, and the "F" is not visable (remains background orange). The top 1/2 of the fuel level hash marks work correctlt, but from 1/2 down to zero they are grey when the tank is full. The bottom three hashmarks will turn black when the level falls below 1/2 full.

2. Observing the speedometer during acceleration and deceleration, there apears to be no false black elements, but other components are sometimes grey instead of black, or grey instead of orange.

Is this likely a ground, wiring or cluster problem ?

Thanks for any help,

S. L. Sikes
