My '90 is new to me and I'm working out all the little things. My wife fell in love with it and wants it when I'm ready to move up! OH BOY the green light, when I get some cash, so I have to make it safe and mechanically sound.
When putting it in Drive, there seems to be a slight delay followed by a noticable "Clunk". It is not as noticable when putting it in Reverse. I also notice it slightly when slowly accelerating as it goes through the gear changes. When accelerating quickly through the gears it isn't noticable. Other than that the drive train seems fine.
Could be tranny, but U-joints would also cause a clunk going into gear.
i have the clunk on my 85 - i also had bad u-joints. after i replaced the u-joints (all six), i still have the clunk. i suspect a worn differential (noticed some play in the differential, but didn't notice any play the the transmission). i'm presently replacing my rear hub/bearing assemblies, and i do have a small amount of play in the differential. since this is a costly unit to replace, and just might be beyond my "home shop" capabilities to rebuild, i'll just live with it. i have noticed that when parking, if i apply the e-brake while still in drive (or reverse) - prior to putting it into park, i don't seem to have the clunk the next time it goes in gear. i think that little e-brake procedure somehow locks in some little pre-load thing on the ring/pinion gears - ???. (original poster) give the e-brake thing a try and let me know if it works for you.
Check your U-Joints, had this problem and the u-joints were bad(dried up,17yrs. old Yah Know!),replaced problem solved. Check first if bad "Then" replace.
Hope this helps! Thanks,Matt
