I Read a couple weeks ago about a known problem with around the 94 Vett and the starter giving trouble. Not 2 weeks later Bamn I turn my key and click, Thinking back to what I read it said just shutting off and back on quick would fix it. I did that and it work.
Ever since then it is problematic, 2 to 4 tries every time I start my car. (Fearing it wont start one of these times soon)
Any way first guess, Starter!!!!
But I remember something in the article (that I can't find) about this possibly being something else other then starter!
Any suggestions or does it sound like the starter to you guys?
Its important to know what is doing the "clicking". If the click you hear is from behind the dash, then the start enable relay is working and the start solenoid isn't. If the click is definetely from the starter solenoid, then you need to remove the battery cables and clean the cable lugs and the battery posts. I recommend also that you go buy the big 5/8 brass terminal bolts at a parts store and throw the OE 5/16 wimpy bolts away. The start solenoid current goes through the clutch sw or if auto xmsn, the gear selector sw and then through the start enable relay which is activated by VATS. The start enable relay contacts may be worn out and you can jump the relay contacts and see if it will then start. You can check the clutch sw by jumping or the gear selector sw by jumping to test them . VATS won't allow a start when the contacts in the ign sw no longer connect to the pellet in your key. You can test the contacts by measuring the resistance on the wires at the base of the steering column under the carpet. There is a 2 pin connector there, disconnect and measure the wires from the column, not the ones going to the passenger side.
Measure with the ign key inserted and it should measure the same as the pellet. If it is higher than 20k ohms, or infinity, then you need a new ign sw which has new contacts for the pellet. Try your spare ign key first because its pellet contacts on the key won't be as worn and may work more reliably than your everyday key. If it does, then get a new ign sw installed.
