Default Fired it up today. It's alive!

I fired her up today to do a visual leak check. Two coolant leaks (one fixed, one dripping from above the oil filter which I'm assuming is an intake leak-yikes) and one leaky injector. I'm not exactly sure how to go about fixing the injector. My guess is its too shallow in the port? Or could it be from too much fuel pressure?

I'm getting alot of ticking from the engine which I thought, at first were my new rockers (but I know I set the lash correctly), but I remember hearing that the Big Mouth intake creates alot of injector ticking.

She sure sounded good though...aside from running way too rich since I haven't changed the chip, and idle hunting.

awesome man.. bet your excited.. don't sweat the little gremlins, just tackle them one at a time, you'll get them all ironed out.

as for ticking.. how do you set your lash and are these solid or hydraulic rollers? or 86 flat tappet hydraulics?

I used 1.6 flat tappet rockers. I use the spinning pushrod method for setting the lash. Where you tighten the rocker (in a neutral cam lobe position) until you can no longer spin the pushrod with your fingers, and then add a 1/4 turn.

I found that my injector leak is being caused by interference from the runner on cylinder no. 2. Look like it is under lateral pressure and the runner will need to be shaved. Sure wish I had known that before I got the damn thing all put together!!!!

I bet my neighbors loved me today.....this puppy is ferocious sounding!

silver86,

I am sure others use this methode, but that is definately not 1/4 turn past zero lash.. that is WAY tight.. zero lash is only the vertical movement of the pushrod.. basically just try and get it to tick while in a neutral lobe position by sliding the pushrod up and down until the tick goes away this is zero lash.. then tighten a 1/4 turn this will give you max rpm without pump up or float.

the other way to do it uif you are using stock style rockers (stamped is while running.. loosen until it ticks... then tighten 1/4 turn after the tick just goes away. the tighten until it doesn't spin is like 2 turns past zero lash and you have preloaded the hell out of the lifter plunger.

Chris,

Thanks for the info. I'll check them again while I've got the valve cover off, after I get the fuel leak taken care of. That part, of course, is really burnin' my ***!
