so i finally get my cooling gremlins all worked out and so about 30 minutes ago i went for a test drive to get some temp in the engine
during this short jaunt i heard a ticking noise that increases with engine speed it's rather loud and seems to be coming from the right side but beyond that it is difficult to tell where. my dad thinks it is a valvetrain noise like a broken valve or stuck lifter. it isn't an injector tick cause i already have one and this is much louder and more mechanical
also it didn't happen before my car sat for 3 months so wtf could happen just from sitting for that relatively short time (is my dad right and i'm f'd)
i'm driving it to work in the morning to see what breaks or loosens up
also i'm selling it as soon as i fix this prob and paint it
While it's entirely possible to have a collapsed lifter, busted valve spring, or other broken parts, I think it's more likely a sticky valve or a lifter that's having some troubles. Broken valvetrain parts are more likely to be from some "spirited" driving or other RPM related abuse to the engine. IF, IF it's a sticky valve, it'll go away after some use. Don't run it hard, easy does it to let things loosen up. When you sell it, be forthcoming about the cars issues. I've seen too many people that have to "look over their shoulder" throughout life for the sake of a few bucks. just my .02
so i had one of my bosses listen to it today and it only made the sound after it was heated up he thinks he hears 3 sounds
one is the #4 injector tick i know that ones there
one he thinks is a valvetrain prob like a lifter or out of spec rocker
one he thinks is a main bearing
the second and third sound the same to me
the car is at work still so i will pull that pita of a passenger valve cover tomorrow or something
If it's a bearing, it's going to THUD liek a hammer hitting tyhe bottom/side of the engine, and not 'tick'. Also chances are you will be down on power a LOT and oil heats up very fast under load..

That's how my '85 died..
I don't think you could hear a main that easily, now a rod is a different story. I would focus on getting rid of the valve train noise first. How many miles? Use the stethoscope method to locate the offending part of the engine, I always use a shop vac extenion with my ear on one end until I hear/find the noisy bastard.
I'm not sure if an 86 has pre-cats but that's what my 87 sounded like when they went bad. Sounded like a lifter, rod and bad injecters all at once. The material in the precats was loose and rattles when it get's hot. Get under it when its hot and you can hear it best. ap on it and it will rattle. I just gutted mine. Hope this helps.
