If your car has the original Multec fuel injectors (gray body color) unplug the injector connector and measure with an ohm meter the resistance across the coil windings.

Should be around 16 ohms. Do this when the engine is cold and with the engine hot. The injector coils on the Multec injectors used in 89 are cooled by the gasoline. Over time the some of the additives would eat away the insulation of the coils.

Default Have you done a basic tune up.

If you haven’t done a basic tune up, (plugs, wires, cap, and rotor) then do that before you start playing around. Too many people look for problems when it’s just maintenance. How long ago, how many miles since you done this.

A fuel pressure guage, FSM, a timing light, multimeter, and good set of tools, can give you a lot of info on a C4. There are a number of things it could be. Clogged fuel filter, failing fuel pump, faulty injector(s), dirty IAC/TB, out of adjusted TPS, spark plugs wires not going to the right cylinder, vacuum leaks, faulty O2 sensor, dirty air filter, clogged PVC, MAF error, bad ECM, ect.

Is the Service Engine Soon light on?
Have you checked fuel pressure?
Does it idle rough when the engine is cold, hot, or both?
Are the spark plug wires routed correctly and to the right cylinder?
Are you sure you have spark at each cylinder?

Give us a little more info and it souldn't be hard to find the problem.

Could it be a torque converter beginning to fail? Try disconnecting the plug on the pass side of the trans and take a test ride. Had something similar happen on a friends 84. It was the converter, in his case. Worth a look. Quick and easy to do.
