Default Mixed up Antifreeze dilema?

I bought an LT1 that had some work done to it and they couldnt ever get it to stay cool. This is what I found hiding under the engine preheat valve housing...

Could it be from mixed pink and green coolants and how do I get it out of the block?

Thanks for any suggestions, Tom

It might be from those goofy coolant tabs the GM told people to use. I'd do about 200 cooling flushes, pull the radiator and have it cleaned at a rad shop.

That is ugly and it looks like chewing gum or brain matter .
Whats the consistency? Is it like jello or like gum?

Regardless, that is fugly! I agree with a thorough system flush.

Well it is hard like it started out like jello but I think the knuclehead just kept on driving till the cars computer went into self preservation mode and shut it down, not before a headgasket let go. The pink stuff is now the consistancy of dried up coral.

I'd guess it's some type of stop leak crap gone bad, or maybe a big load of "Form-a-Gasket" that got misplaced.

According to Havoline, you CAN mix Dexcool with green antifreeze without any problems(They have a text file on their website stating this), and having had the DEATHcool gummi bear problem with my Blazer, I can tell you it didn't look anything like that. The Dexcool just turned into sludge, it never hardened.

I had my cooling system "power flushed"...they do it with high pressure air and I would suggest it...I had it done at a repudable radiator shop and it was only like $79 including refill with proper fluids...

Solid or brittle?

Firstly, my vote is that if you aren't already - start wearing nitrile gloves.

Collect the bits and test them in samples of potential flushing agents.
See if anything not harmful to the cooling system will break down the
residue after a 24 hr soaking.

If you don't find something that will break it down, I don't believe a
flush is going to do the job. There's the potential that stuff is
obstructing passages in the heads and block, not to mention the
heater core, radiator oil cooler (if fitted) and all associated plumbing.

If it is hard/solid - I am thinking a worst case scenario is disassembly
and sonic treatment. Followed by a conventional tanking.

I'm hoping for the 24hr soak (worse case)

Good Luck!

It almost looks like fiberglass insulation. When it gets wet it will stiffen up quite a bit like compressed cotton candy. Can you see it any where else in the system? Good luck, Robert

I would flush the hell out of it myself first. A local shop tried to replace my entire cooling system after they did a flush. They said they couldnt stop it from overheating. I took it home did it myself and saved over $1k. Probably just had some air in it.
