Default a/c trouble

I need help! black on black 84 with a/c on the fritz = no fun!
I recently replaced compressor and recharged the system with r 12.
I've never had much air coming from the vents, very weak pressue. I have pulled the blower and ran it off of a battery charger, seems fine.
replaced fan relay also. Here is where it gets strange, my commute home is about 25 minutes in mixed traffic. the last bit being stop and go. I noticed several time while running the a/c on my way home that my low voltage warning light would come on. Voltage seems to bottom out at 11.3. As soon as I turn the a/c, off voltage returns to normal. I have had to replace the blower fuse twice now. where should I look for faults, and why is my air pressure from the vents so weak? I need help 'cause I'm frying my *** off! also new alternator if that makes any difference. Boosting the rpm's doesn't do much to raise the voltage either, so I've got a heck of a drain somewhere.

Since you had to replace the blower fuse twice it would seem that the blower motor current draw is excessive. Coupled with low air output I would say bad motor. If you have the tools do an amp draw test on the motor, if not this is one of the rare occassions I would say you have enough evidence to replace a part without further testing.

the motor was my suspicion too, although when I had it hooked to the charger it drew about 12 amps. seems a bit high for a small motor like that but it never changed and I left it hooked up running for about 45 minutes. I'll try the motor first. Ecklers has it for under $40.00. small money to pay for keeping cool!

Examine the harness and connector too - old motors can draw up to 25 amps and with the voltage drop, something is sucking a ton - probably enough to melt wires. I'd take apart the weatherpak and solder the terminals just to make sure the new motor gives you all it's got and I'd also make sure the squirrel cage is one piece.

thanks for the replies, much appreciated ! I did remove the motor, externally it and the fan looked to be in good shape, no squeeks or noise. didn't even get warm after running outside of the car for 30+ minutes . I am going to change the motor, since I dont get much air from the dash but I dont think that is going to fix the total problem. looking at the wiring it is abundantly clear attention is needed.Sun cr when you say weather pack, what part are you referring to? I see from your profile you are from San Diego too, so with the weather we have had the past week and a black on black car I'm sure you can guess how anxious I am to fix this ! Thanks again!

A weatherpack is a sealed wiring connection so as to prevent moisture and corrosion. Normally seen in under hood connections. If the seal is not tight and moisture enters the wiring connections it can cause high resistance and cause the wires to burn, also lower voltage/amperage to the load side of the connection. If you open up the connection and see same green corrosion you have that problem. A dab of diaelectric grease is never a bad idea.

I just replaced my blower motor after having issues similar to yours with the little to no air flow. $34 at Advance. Blows hard now (obvious joke here).

Your current draw could be something other than the blower motor. Replace the motor first and see if that fixes both problems.

SunCR.....your advice has saved me a ton of sweat! Thanks!
