In the meantime check with Rich at www.cruzinperformance.com. Read through the website and if you have questions give him a call. He is a great source of info and will steer you in the right direction.

Well cleaning the injectors is fine. I believe (after changing injectors in my 86) if you go through the trouble of taking the intake apart to get to them I would just purchase new injectors. I have seen where they cost about $12 each to have them spray tested. You can get new ones for about $200. But you never know, this should be your call. You can spend $100 on getting them cleaned and tested and they last for a month, 5 years, or might spend the money and find out one or two are bad anyway. You can get new injectors and they might last for a month, 5 years, or one ore two are bad when you install them...rare. All depends on your luck.

If you have any mechanic skills, you can test them yourself. They can be ohmed hot and cold and have a fuel pressure test for leak down. If you trust your mechanic then let him guide you.

Fuel pressure guage: $40
ohm/multimeter: $20

Default '88 w/dirty injectors

Before you do anything internal, why not start out simple. Get the larger bottle of injector and fuel system cleaner at your local parts store. It'll say that it treats like up to 21 gallons or something. Wait until you have 1/2 tank of gas and pour it into the fuel tank. Try to make short trips, as the solvents work only after you turn off the engine and they are allowed to soak into the deposits on your injectors. This is exactly how deposits get onto the injectors. You turn off the ignition and the last little droplets of fuel cling to the injector nozzle and eventually evaporate leaving the deposits behind. This way it soaks the solvent into the crud and next time you start it up it lets the softened up stuff drop off and into the combustion chamber to be harmlessly burned. If you put the stuff in and then drive the whole tank dry on a long trip, you've accomplished virtually nothing. It's worth a try. It worked well on mine. Always start with K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid.

Default Injectors And Tune-up

I bought the cleaner-but car still rides rough--it has 25k orig miles-do you recommend a tune-up and if so what parts. Should i also go with the injector blowout cleaning the guy is recommending?

He's probably talking about a machine that hooks to the car and circulates cleaner through the injectors for about an hour, I can't remember the name of the system, but I had it done and it worked. The emissions reductions were dramatic, got me past a failed test with flying colors on the second go around.

Well, with an 88 vette at 25,000 miles, wasn't exactly a road warrior. So, having the injectors cleaned on car is a reasonable approach. If you were equiped, I'd try the injector balance test, listen to the injectors, ohm check hot and cold, yada yada yada. Even doing that, you may have a bad spray pattern. As noted earlier, best injector test is to remove, subject them to flow test at varying pulse/RPM rates, test the volume, ohm test hot and cold, compare results. Yea, its an investment. Tough call when you can get 8 injectors for $200. Now, in this case, with only 25K, I'd be tempted to do the on car cleaning. This would be done AFTER checking the items listed in the Factory Service Manual for rough idle. If you do not know when it last had plugs, wires, cap, etc, after 17 years, ah, who knows. I'd sure take a serious look at the throttle body. The gasket kit for that is around $9 at NAPA.

In summary, the tune up kit is a good idea in my opinion, and the on car injector cleaning doesn't disturb many parts. I'd give it a shot.

Let us know how it turns out.

Default RR VETTE ? and others

where did you get your injectors for 200.00? is there a particular part number....

the mech wants 150.00 just to clean them..what do you suppose the labor to remove and install the new injectors?

Go here and get yourself a shop manual for your vehicle. www.helminc.com. Than go to www.summitracing.com and get yourself some ford motor sport injectors(someone on this board will have a part number) and do the work yourself. Even if you don't have tools, some tools a shop manual and some time you'll be money ahead in the end and will have the knowledge to do the work yourself for another time. Shop rates are horrible and for what they charge you'll have paid for the parts above and be way better off. Good luck and if you get stuck than ask more questions as that is what the forum is for.

Printer1: Look at this thread for some good info on changing out the injectors of early C4 TPI engines: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1420400
Hope this is helpful, SAM
