Default carb intakes flow number!!!!

hey guys,

I was at the shop that does the head work for me , i took my old set of AFR heads and my old super vic intake, we set the head on the flow bench and got it flowed then I set my intake on the heads and got the head flowed with the intake on. the intake killed the flow by 40 CFM the intake flowed about 270 out of the box ... that easy power that i was loosing just for not porting my intake. i was told that this intake flows plenty of air for my heads with out poring but i guess not .. What am trying to get to is what’s the point of spending money on a head that flows 300cfm and higher when your intake cant take it ... just make sure you guys spend money on porting the intake . I know few guys like jesse are using the same intake. So jesse if you didn’t port that intake your killing your heads and lots of power …

A Victor Jr. (2975) will flow 275 cfm "dry" at 28"; a 2925 (Super Vic) is only slightly better at around 280. By all standards available for TPI-style cars this is a ton...But it can be heavily improved upon with porting. The ideal is to have an intake capable of flowing more air than your heads that way it is not bottleneck. If you have heads that flow more than 275-280 cfm you will not take full advantage of this design UNLESS they're ported.

Even if both pieces flowed 300 cfm separately, they will not flow 300 cfm when combined unless the pressure difference is changed. The flow numbers quoted are just an indicator of the airflow at a set pressure drop.

Also don't forget to take into consideration port velocity.

I'm saying that if part A flows 300 cfm at 28" and part B flows 300 cfm at 28", when part A is bolted to part B, the combination will not flow 300 cfm at 28".

Also if you increase the flow capability of part B, the combination of part A and part B will increase but not equal to the increase in the flow capacity of Part B by itself.

I had heard you wanted the intake flow to be ~140% of the head max flow. I know I am KILLING my 28xcfm heads with my mildly ported SR.

What exactly are your new heads? I've been MIA for the last couple of months and haven't heard. You're approaching my SB2.2 heads with that kind of flow.
