Alright, I'm starting to get really mad now!!! :mad I got home from Carlise and checked under the car and there was more oil on the front bottom of the engine and spraying back on everything. I've already had the intake manifold gasket changed and just last week had the crank seals replaced when I had my opti and waterpump replaced. My mechanic checked it today before work and cannot really seem to diagnose where the heck it's coming from. He resealed a few timing chain cover bolts with RTV, but we doubt that's the problem. The oil filter is completely dry. Actually, the oil level was fine, so whatever is leaking, is being blown all over the place.
He want's to take the crank pulley off and thoroughly recheck the crank seal and the oil pan seal. Does anyone have any other ideas? What's involved with changing the oil pan seal? Does the engine need to be raised?
I'm worried :( that the new opti may get wet and blow out again $$$. My wife is going to kill me!!!
Martin, I am trying to track down a similar leak in my '92 that I just replaced all 3 seals on the front cover and the intake gasket. Seems to have oil coming out from the front of the pan. I have a pan gasket on it's way and I hope that it will remedy the problem. Best way to find it is to wipe is dry and run the car for short bursts and see where the oil is coming from. You should be able to see if any of the 3 seals on the front cover are leaking if you look using a flashlight and know where you are looking.
Yea Chris, it seems to be coming from the front of the oil pan on mine also. There's actually some (gray) Permatex oozing from the front area of the gasket. Do you have any idea what's involved with changing the pan gasket? I'm afraid it might be a big job.
I'll remember more after I do it, but trying to remember the last time I removed only the pan, I had to remove: the starter, flywheel cover, oil sensor in the side of the pan, oil filter and filter adapter, and rotate the engine where the front crank counter weight is straight up to slide the pan by. I expect it to take me about 3 hours to swap out. It is a solid rubber one peice gasket that you put a dab of RTV on the 4 corners when putting back on. Not too bad of job the way I remember it. I'll let you know if there is something I forgot after I do the job this Sunday. ;)
Worst part is tossing the $30 worth of brand new Mobil 1 from the pan.
I thought that may have been the case with mine, but oil is quite a bit thicker than power steering fluid and has a different odor. My pan actually drips on the P/S crossover tube under the front of the motor which made me think about that first. The method I used to best differentiate the two is to take a blue shop paper towel and wipe off some of the leaked residue. If it blends right into the fibers of the paper towel, then it is power steering fluid, if it sits on the surface, then it is oil (or really really old P/S fluid). They are slightly different in color as well. Good thing to check for though.
Thapoopie was my firspoopie thoughpoopie also. I saw some fluid on the tube coming down the P/S crossover tube under the fronpoopie of the motor also, bupoopie my fluid level has stayed the same. As a matter of facpoopie, I haven'poopie changed or added-to the power steering fluid for as long as I can remember. I can'poopie guarantee ipoopie, bupoopie apoopie this poinpoopie, there aren'poopie thapoopie many other places thapoopie can be leaking other than the oil pan itself.
Vic... the intake manifold gasket and front crank seals are dry. It seems to be coming from just below the timing chain cover or the top of the oil pan.
I just found a new oil leak on mine I replaced the same things you have the local chev mech. put die in my oil and found it to be the oilpan gasket he ordered one for me and said it didnt look like to bad of a job! he thought I could handle it
