my car recently quit changing gears, it has been getting stuck in 1st gear when i stop. sometimes it will be fine but at others i will have to stop again and put it in park, that seems to fix the problem when i start again Sometimes but not all the time. I will almost redlline it in first then it will stop accelerating kinda like the clutch is held in (its an automatic)
could someone please help me out?
oh an yes i checked my trans fluid....it was a little low and i added the appropriate ammount
I recently had that problem with my Auto. It was explained to me as a throttle valve problem. Evidently there is a valve in the trans that is linked to the throttle. This valve has the Trans increase hydraulic pressure as the throttle is increased. Unfortunately in the 700R4 it is a rather poor part and any impurities in the trans fluid can clog the valve and thus the pressure will not increase and therefore it will not shift. This can happen even with clean fluid. To clear the problem, stop the car, turn off the engine. Pump the gas pedal several times to get the valve moving again. (Since we have TPIs this will not flood the engine). Start it up and you're off again (most of the time). Mine was doing this for about 5 or 6 days. After that the problem seemed to go away.
Even changing the fluid may not get all the impurities out right away. But it definately helps to keep clean fluid.
Mine was stuck in 3rd gear, of course it's probably all those needle bearings that I am finding in every clutch pack, nook, and cranny from the planetary gear that decided to break in there and chew up the teeth on all those fancy little gears. Oh well. I find out tomorrow if it's worth rebuilding or I'm just going to get a rebuilt one.
Life is good.
