i've replaced everything on my 93 LT1 ignition system Dyna-spark, new spark plugs, spark plug wires etc... and now iam on the verge of replacing my OEM ignition coil which is 13 years old with 83,000 on it, question how good of a OEM replacement is MSD"s coil blaster? or should i just stick with the OEM ignition coil?
thanks boonie
My car (95) was missing and one of the things I did was to replace the stock with an MSD Blaster (#8226). This did not totally solve the problem but the car definitely ran better with just the coil swap.

Unless you're going to be revving this engine way north of the factory redline (which will require reprogramming the rev limiter), stay with the OEM coil. It is more than adequate for the task.
I have one on my car.It does not add much if anything to performance but looks cool as it is red.Every ignition part I have replaced had resulted in some kind of better performance possibly due to aged parts or better quality.I have done the reasearch on coil operation and it depends more on the plug gap as far as spark goes and as long as it provides enough volatage to do it there is no added benefit from using a higher volatge producing coil as the arc over voltage remains the same.

I have the MSD and it works fine. Is it necessary or beneficial?? As many have stated, probably not. But when you compare the price to a new OEM unit, you may be surprised.
The Blaster 2 coil is complete garbage hooked 3 of them up to my 94 Impala SS and they kept shorting out after awhile and burning out leaving me stranded. Luckily they were covered under warrantee. but after the last one I just said the hell with it. I dont know how much performance it gives you but with the Blaster 2 coil and MSD 6al box it did give me better throttle response but it wasnt worth the headaches of breaking down and compromising reliability.
I just ordered one new for $32 on ebay. Not a bad deal, couldnt pass it up. My stock one was fine and will be kept as a backup. At 80k miles, I wanted to upgrade some things including ignition parts. I have never had any problems with past MSD parts. Most of their stuff is well made. I will let you know if it craps out.

Just do what I did and just unhook the wires from the old coil but leave it still installed on the motor that way if you do break down you can plug in the old coil and be on your way
I've had trouble with the MSD Blaster internal coil on my '90. I've gone through this twice using brand new MSD coils from Summit Racing and had the same result. The factory tach wigged out at about 3800 RPM and it must have screwed up the signal going back to the computer to advance the timing. Best quarter mile with the MSD was a 14.9, put the factory coil back in, complete with 112K miles of use and scored a 14.0 at 100. Figure that one out!
Mabey some of MSD's rep is undeserved based on what you guys say. Can't wait for the first failed MSD opti thread then.It will make me feel better about my overpriced Dynaspark.
I tried the Jegs coil and burnt that one to the ground in a week.
I got the MSD coil and burnt down the 6al MSD box.Replaced the box a year ago and everything has been fine since.
Sorry Dynaspark it is not what I really mean.To elaborate the guys who have been promoting the MSD over your product have infered that thier quality and because it is cheaper means it is better than yours.I do not agree and having one of yours in your hands you can see the quality built into it.It has a proven track record of no failures due to lack of quality.Only failures I have read were due to install issues.I am and was willing to pay a little more for that kind of piece of mind.I can do without the fancy colored cap and new whiz bang opti sensor(The old one is the most durable part of the ignition system and needed no improvement) that probably came from China.Sure the Mitsu sensor was from Japanbut thier quality record is well known.
