Default 85 Problem

Just got my car back from my ex-girlfriend after a break-up and while she was driving it waiting to get her new car, she took it to a shop because when the car is cold, it runs like crap, but once it warms up it runs fine. Before I start in on the thing I was wondering if anyone here had anything similar happen or can tell me where to begin. The shop finally told her they couldn't fix it. And they SUPPOSEDLY are a "good" shop here in Galveston. Whatever...

Start with checking to see if there are any codes set. If there are, follow the trouble shooting charts in your FSM to correct them. If problems persist, the FSM also has charts to help you find the causes of different symptoms.

RACE ON!!!

OK. So I got the manual and am getting no codes, so I went through and through the manual looking for anything similar to the symptoms the car is having...Runs fine AFTER it warms up. I was thinking maybe the coolant temperature sensor, or the manifold temperature sensor. It does start running fine when the temperature gauge reaches around 170 or so. Thanx for any help.

I had the same problem last year and tried everything. It was very frustrating. I finally found it by luck. My MAF was bad but not bad enough for the ecm to set an error code. Email me if you can't figure it out tupp@swbell.net. I live in Friendswood and might be able to help if all else fails.

It's not the coolant temperature sensor (I replaced it & no change). I did find out that my check engine light isn't even working so I started tracing down THAT problem. Bulb is fine, and the FSM says to check circuit 419 (which goes to ground to light the bulb from what I understand) and it lit up the test light according to the FSM test. That indicated open circuit 419, open circuit 39 to bulbcircuit, or a bad bulb. Is circuit 39 the foil circuit that the bulb screws into on the idiot center? Also, there was a red 10 amp fuse just behind the idiot center and it was blown so I replaced it. Still no light. Is there a fuse to the ECM somewhere?

Got the CE light working, ran the diagnostic, got code 33 and was wondering if there are any other things I have to change when I change the MAF? Thanx to everyone who helped. Basically it boiled down to pouring over the FSM until I found the problem. WHEW!

If you found a code 33 and you have the FSM, just follow the troubleshooting steps for the code. It will lead you to find the problem. It could be the MAF, wiring, connection, ect.

Flip to page 6E3-51 and follow the diagnostic chart. It isn't necessarily a bad MAF.

OK. I did. It was the MAF...Put in the new one, reset & no more codes. Had to adjust the idle up to around 750. Thanx ya'll.
