I am having a problem starting my 87 auto. The car starts fine most of the time. But if i turn on my fans or if the radio is on it cranks over like i had a dead battery or if the motor was seizing or something. I watch the batt gauge and it cranks with about 13 volts and does this. Does this sound like maybe my battery is going. Maybe it doesnt have enough juice to turn over the car and run my fans and radio? I just replaced the starter and the wiring is fine. any ideas??
Get a voltmeter and test the volts at the battery and make sure the cables are clean and tight. Also check the fuse links behind the battery and make sure they are clean and tight (the cluster of red wires that connect to one post).
all conections are good and tight. I took them all off and wire burshed them and checked at the battery 13.6 volts. checked the alternator at idle 13.6 volts. Not sure what is going on it is almost like i dont have enough voltage to crank over the engine but i know i do. i even cheked the resistance of all wires related thinking i had a bad wire but to no avail......i have been told to check the timing but i dont see how 8 degrees should be too much. And yes i disconnected the tan wire when setting the timing. Anyone got anything.
Edit: Just tried to start it while it was hot and the starter motor engaged and it cranked over and then the drive motor kept running. *the starter never disengaged after the car started*.....I killed power with my killswitch.(lifesaver) Waited a little bit and it started and the starter motor worked like it should but it still had a drag like there wasnt enough voltage. Can a battery read good on the tester that the parts stores have that wheel around and really be bad. I mean it takes an instant reading. Arent you supposed to check a battery by charging it all the way up and put a load on it and see if it takes it? Should i just get a new battery?
