Default A/C acting strange

Had my A/C tested the other day (put the car up for sale) & it checked out OK in an idle situation. Did not show any pressure drop. Temp got down to 60 (or less) inside.
Took the car on the road & the A/C worked OK for about 5 minutes, then stopped blowing cold.
Car sat in garage for a couple of hours & I tried it again in an idle & it works fine. As soon as it goes on the road, it only works for a few minutes.

No error codes displayed either. ??

Any ideas?? 1990 auto/vert

Paul

Check to see if the compressor cluch is engaged with the A/C on. If the clutch is not turning along with the belt. If not, poll the connector ans measuer the voltage across on of the leads. It should be reading near the same voltage as the battery. If the is battery voltage to the connector, then you have a clutch out. If there is zero voltage to the connector, then you have either a sendor problem. Or a freon leak, where the system is not sealed and cannot build enough pressure to allow the ECM to activate the compressor clutch.

The next time it stops cooling, pull over and look under the hood to see if the suction line is frosted over. If you have ice/frost on the suction line, check the charge - it sounds like it may be low. When your a/c is working correctly the suction line should be sweating, and cold to the touch.

There is a pressure switch that will turn the compressor on and off while you are running the air conditioner. When your refrigerant pressure falls to a certain point the refrigerant temperature will be below 32 degrees, and cause your evaporator to freeze up. This will restrict the air flow and make it feel like your a/c isn't blowing at all.

Sounds like you may need to have the the system topped off. Do you have R-12 or 134 refrigerant?
