hello everyone this is my first post but just recently purchased an 89 convertible and the water pump seems to be making a whining sound. does anyone have any experience changing one? i would like to know how hard it is to do. thanks everyone
If so, start the car and CAREFULLY put the tip of the driver on the waterpump and put your ear on the handle. This acts as a stethoscope, so you can isolate where the noise is coming from.
There is also an idler pulley, AC, the alternator, AIR (emissions) pump and PS pump... you will want to do that check on all of them.
This will confirm the noise source. Why go through the hell of a waterpump swap when all you need is a idler/tensioner?
I've done it... You have to take off everything in order to get to it.
It's been a while. I have to go look at the car.
I started out with Air box, MAF, TB....
I changed one on a 85 I used to have. I don't remember it being difficult. Once all the engine components are remove to get access to the water pump it's no problem. It's been about 6 years since I did it, sorry I'm not much help. I believe at that time I had a Haynes manual and it walked me through it.
