I have a '90 that had been bogging sporadically and would sometimes have trouble starting.
It was determined by a mechanic that a few fuel injectors are shorting out and he suggested that I replace all 8. He is looking at a total cost of around $2,300!!
I was wondering if anyone has had similar problems, whether this price is fair and any other suggestions you may have regarding this issue. Thank you very much.
Your mechanic is high. Most guys swap in ford motorsport injectors. Approx $250 shipped for all 8. Toss in an adjustable fuel regulator and guage and you are up to $400 max. Even figuring 5 hrs labor at a high cost will keep you well under 1k
Rip off, you could buy injectors, AFR, gauge, noid tester, my airfare, lodging and still be under that cost....Bring it home and tell you mechanic to suck air
AJ90: The Multec injectors on my 89 were shorting out and the car was running like crap. I would recommend you check the injectors to confirm you have a shorting problem. This is an easy test with a good ohm meter. You are looking for a reading in the 16 to 17 ohm range. Anything less than 16, is going south. Three of my injectors were below 16 and one was about 7.5 ohms. New GM injectors were going to cost me $142 each.....with a good discount! With dealer labor rates, I could see you spending $2,300. I bought a used set of 88 Bosch injectors and had Rich at Cruzin performance check them out for me. I spent about $100 on parts and did the work myself. I have a procedure that will allow you to change out the injectors without pulling the runners from the intake. Let me know if you want a copy of this. Do not run the car with shorted injectors as this can damage the ECM injector drivers due to higher current draw from the defective injectors.
I think $2,300 is way too much to have someone install injectors in a L98. I would look for a different mechanic before you get pimp slapped. The labor from a decent mechanic shouldn't cost over $400 and the injectors and found at a decent price. Sounds like they are charging for each injector, install, and beer money.
Hell you could find a run down C4 for that price that probably has good injectors.
Dude! Tell the mechanic thanks but no thanks! You could buy your new injecter's and fly one of us out to your house to help you put these in and it would still be cheaper! Listen to Pete and the other forum member's as to putting in new set of injecter's. I bought a set of cleaned ,flowed, rebuilt Ford 24lb injecter's for $150.00 w/shipping and installed them myself in a few hours along with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. It's not hard and you can do it yourself!(or fly someone out to help!)
