harmonic balancer question

Default harmonic balancer question

i have a 1985 vette with a stock 350 i noticed today that the harmonic balancer appears to be moving alittle. i appears to be loose or something. i feel a vibration in the engine when sitting in park and raising the rpm's. i feel the vibration is coming from the harmonic balancer, if so how difficult is it to remove?? thanks for your time rrthomas1963

It is not that difficult with the correct tools. The most important is the balancer puller. Given that you have not done it before, you may want to have someone assist you that is familiar with how it is done. Whatever you do, replace it with a new balance. They are not as expensive as a new radiator, hood or whatever when that ring happens to catch on it's way off of the crank. And yes, I'm sure many people here will testify to seeing one come apart.

I just did mine. Take your time, and remove all the stuff that is in your way. Which is about everything. Waterpump, pulleys, top radiator hose, anything in the way. Remember to use a new front seal in the timing chain cover. I pulled mine carefully as not to get any dirt, or debris in the oil pan. I coated the outside of the seal with teflon liquid. Kinda like the tape, but in a tube. I carefully tapped it in place, then rubbed a little grease on the seal surface. I also put grease on the outside shaft of the damper, just a light film. Putting it on is easy. taking it of was a bit of a pain. I had to remove one power steering line to get the puller in. It was only 1/4 inch off "geeze". that seal business is alot easier if the timing chain cover is removed. That is in another class by itself. Try to keep everything CLEAN. Best of luck...

If its loose, gotta replace it and reset the timing afterward. Its probably been off the whole time.

Problem is getting to it, thankfully when I did mine everything else was coming out anyway.
