Default ECM, code; history72, current72

Hi,
With these codes, I believe I will need a new ECM. Got rid of all the other codes. A man from Fisher said $130 for a new one. With my recent experience with NAPA, I Think it would be best to go with GM parts from a dealer. I was told you have to get it burned with your VIN, mileage, and so on; by a dealer anyway. Just thought I would ask our community. I have a lot of trust in it. I'm going to put some miles on my 92 LT1 this weekend. I hope this will be the best way to see what is really going on. Thanks and Happy Forth to you all. Larry

well... you don't need to get anything burned.

the ECM only requires you swap the chip from the old to the new ECM.

so a H72, C72 is indicative of a bad ECM?

no, it's not... it's indicitive of a gear selection error.

you really need to get a copy of the Helm Factory Service Manual - www.helminc.com - and debug this problem correctly.

Thank you for your replies. The Helms manual, I thought pointed to ECM down at the bottom of the page. Maybe this is not a possibility. I do have the red and white manual, book #1. I will check out your replies and leads. Thank you, Larry

Thank you, Bogus and Mikec4. I will do some homework. Just wonder if a 86,7,8,or 9 would be simpler. Nothing like these cars. This is the first one I've had and I'm 55. Makes me feel good just crusing. Thanks Guys. LB

You got yourself an LT1, so I think you got the right year!!! The biggest complaint I hear about the LT1's is the Optispark....Never, ever wash your engine, getting water on the Optispark will kill it. Changing these things is a weekend project...If you are not familiar with this distributor design, here is a little light reading:
http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...htp_optispark/

Curious, in your original post, you mentioned an error code, but no symptoms? Is you car misbehaving????

Isn't a c72 usually happen from an after market stereo from tapping into the dimming wire? Thats what mine did after hooking up my after market stereo.

That's a CCM code, not an ECM code.

Dash, meaning the speedo? If so, it is more than likely a CCM code you are getting.

Did you read my link? That still applies, codes and all, for 1994, the only difference is the pins to jump, and I didn't have a 1994 connector to compare it with.

Yeah on the speedo. When I jump 4 and 12 it flashes "1." and then flashes c72, then it flashes 4. and then nine. So it looks like it is a ccm code. I missed the link. Thanks. Printing now.

Hi.
Been on vacation. Sorry to not get back. The 92 LT1 a/t 82k mi. went on vacation with me. no problem shifting. Or no sign of any problem with gear selector. It does have an after market radio though. Very good diagnostic. Thank you. This answers my question. lbreen
