two filters on '87 vette:
1) the sock in the tank mounted on the fuel pump inlet
2) the fuel filter mounted at the passenger footwell on the framerail.
The fuel sending unit is accessable from the fuel door. Simply remove the fuel door, remove the cap, remove the big rubber thing, and you will see a bunch of bolts and hoses... and you are there!
before you remove the hoses, relieve the pressure on the lines... there is a harness at the fuel pump, disconnect and start the car. That will cause the engine to burn off whatever is in the line.
let me guess: the only way to get to it is to drop the tank?
Absolutely not. Do not let anyone tell you that droping the tank to get to the fuel pump on a C4 is necessary. The entire fuel pump assembly pulls up and out from the top after the gas lid is removed.
There is one fuel filter on a 87, to my knowledge, as described. There is a strainer on the bottom of the fuel pump that "I guess" you could call a filter. The fuel pump is accessed by pulling it out of the tank from the top, as described. It is one of the easier things to do on a C4.
Hmm. I've been nothing but good to this car. If the sock/filter is at the top of the tank that doesn't really account for the stumbling I'm experiencing. (It only does it when the engine is hot. -and only when accelerating from a stop. If I punch it when I'm rolling, everything seems fine)
I'll replace the fuel filter, cap/rotor & plugs this weekend and see if things improve. If not I'll try wires and Fuel Pressure Regulator. Other than that I'm at a total loss...

What year vette? The old saying goes "if it aint broke don't fix it" comes to mind.
There is a definitely a filter on the fuel return line on an 87. Mine was replaced about a month ago and I watched my mechanic do it. It was in all likelihood the original filter. When we opened it up, it didn't look very dirty and frankly I could have gotten by without changing it.

I'll replace the fuel filter,
The sock is not at the top of the tank. Reread the posts. However, you are correct in that the sock is unaffected by engine temp. Same as the main fuel filter. It sounds as though you could benefit from a FSM.

RACE ON!!!
last time I looked the Chevy service manual didn't mention a second filter. I'll check again just to be sure.
thanks for the advice but it would be a lot easier if someone knowledgeable said "the second filter is beside the..." or "your looking at the wrong thing, I experienced the same symptoms and it was..."

I can tell you that there is a return line filter on the '87. Unfortunately, my factory lines (and the factory filters) departed the car many years ago.
I think you may be chasing the return line filter for no reason. The highest flow requirements for the return filter is when the car is at idle and the engine is returning most of the fuel. When accellerating, less fuel is returned to the tank, thus the load is less on the return filter.

When they replaced the fuel pump on my '89 they also replaced the "strainer" GM part #14765 for $10.32. I guess that's what you are talking about. They also replaced the "filter" GM part # 25171792 for $17.50. That's the one under the hood. That makes 2 filters I guess!

Check your fuel pressure first, but Id be more suspicious of your injectors. Chek the ohms on them. Mine did the same thing when they went ba.d
