Default engine removal ?s

I'm ready to lift the motor out of my 94 to deal with a spun rod bearing. I have everything disconnected, the trans is removed and the intake is off.1. Where should I attach the lifting chains? Can I use the intake mounting holes on the heads? I've never dealt with aluminum heads before. 2.Also, can I leave the motor mounts attached to the engine and just remove the nut on the bottom of the verical bolt under the mount. 3. Does the wiper motor need to be removed? Thanks guys

You didn't have to remove the transmission, at least I didn't on a 95. The wiper motor probably will get wiped out if you don't take it out. Frankly I don't know how you got the tranny bolt out that's under it. There's no way in hell I could get a swivel or flex socket on the thing from underneath. Had to get it from the top with a wrench.

The motor mounts can stay, just take the nuts off from underneath. I usually look for a place on the block in opposite corners for the chains. Use a bolt with good bite, and then I'll actually tighten down a chain link under it. I feel it adds greater shear strength to the bolt and keeps it from stressing.

Supposebly there's an LT1 lift plate you can buy but that's not an option and I think it's it's unnecessary. Chains and a tilter are all I've ever used

Typically the chain will want to ride on the heads so I'll stuff some towels between the chain and the head(s)

If you need a replacement motor I think my buddy might sell his 95 LT1 we pulled a few weeks ago to drop in his new 383. It ran great but does have 60,000 on it. It was taken out in full running condition with no problems. I have no idea why he's hanging on to it so long. You're kind of local to us so it wouldn't be that hard for you to get it.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll have him post.

I removed my tranny first also. Much easier. I had to take the windshield wiper motor off. I attached a chain to the front of the head on the passenger side with a grade 8 bolt. And cattycornered it to the rear of the driver's side head and they have a bolt hole aprox in the same place. I took my valve covers off so the chains wouldn't break them. Also, on the motor mounts I just took the bolt that connects the two pieces. Just supported the motor and undid the nut and slid that long bolt out. The motor was very easy to pull.

Thanks guys, I just had my tranny out in March for a rebuild so it was pretty easy to remove again and I thought it would make it much easier to lift the motor. I have left the hood on and it looks like it would be a pain with the tranny hanging on the motor. I have some yard and tree work to clean up after last nights storm but after that is done I hope to lift the motor out on Tuesday afternoon.

Well we didn't pull the tranny with the motor, it stayed in place with a jack supporting it.

When we started lifting the engine it popped right free of the tranny.

Installation was bit trickier, it took some good tilt to get the flywheel back under the bellhousing and then "untilt" it down into the frame holes.

It was all just geometry.

I've pulled my engine out using the bolt holes in the heads for the intake. As long as the bolts for the chain are threaded in sufficiently, there should be no problem. I've never removed the wiper motor or the automatic trans. Never really found it to be a big deal, either removing or reinstalling.
