Default Fuel pump relay... another thread

The other 84 (one that my wife drives) is having a small problem. Yesterday she drove it to the store. When she got back into the car it wouldn't start. It just turned over but didn't fire. So she called me and I went over, it was close. So, I get in and the same thing. I listened to see if I heard the fuel pump turn on and I didn't. I checked the connections on the relay and they seemed fine. Tried it again.. and the same thing. I floored the gas pedel and after a second it fired right up.. and ran fine. Today it ran better, she had to floor it once to get it started. Is it safe to awesome that the fuel pump relay may be on its way out? Haven't had a chance to open the FSM as of yet but will soon.

No. Flooring the gas pedal while cranking, puts the ECM into the "clear flood" mode. It shuts off the injectors during cranking, in order to clear a flooded condition. It IS possible that the two conditions are coincidental to allow it to start. My car won't start, hot, because the engine is severely worn out and the oil is too thin to get to 4 psi to close the oil pressure switch to run the pump. Possibly your engine cranks enough rpms faster, with the throttle open, to close the oil pressure switch. Follow the standard trouble shooting steps to verify the fuel pump relay. First, be positive the pump isn't running during the 2 second priming period or while cranking. Verify the pump and the pump fuse and wiring by jumping 12 volts to terminal "G" of the ALDL. By that point you should have a better idea of what is going on.

RACE ON!!!
