Most times I start the car in the AM the indicator for low coolant level comes on. After I drive a block or so it goes off. I believe the sensor is it the "high fill tank".
Today, I actually looked in the tank and it was basically empty. The overflow tank was beyond full. My guess is the the coolant is sucked back in the system as the engine warms. Although this is not a big problem, I can hardly believe it was intended to function in this fashion. I would genuinely appreciate any insight you might have............... thanks.
If the overflow tank is overfull and the surge tank you have one of two problems you either have a fairly large leak high in system (because as coolant drops in temp it contracts therefore pulling vacum and suckingthe coolant back into the surge tank that it expelled when it got hot and expanded), but since you not metioning a leak I'd assume your probably gonna get off real cheap and all you really need is a new cap for the surge tank.
Actually rating shouldn't affect the coolant recovery process, the rating is related to the pressure requried to lift he cap of it's seat and force coolant into the overflow i.e. 16lbs. I think??? it only takes an inch or two of vaccum to open the valve in the center of the cap to pull the coolant from the overflow back into the system. I wonder if you possibly got a faulty cap, or have you been in the cooling system recently and just didn't get it fully purged/filled? Because if you don't start out with a full system, the system will not fill itself especially when you consider the drastic difference in height between the surge and overflow.
