Is this normal?
My '92 Cpe is levitated on four jackstands without the wheels installed because I'm replacing all four rotors (drilled & slotted), pads, and rebuilding the calipers. I also want to change the oil & filter and replace the filter adapter seal & o-ring.
So yesterday I carefully opened the driver side door, depressed the clutch, and started the motor to get the oil flowing and capture/suspend as much of the crud as possible before pulling the pan plug.
As soon as the engine RPM settled I checked the shift lever making sure it was in Neutral, and then I let out the clutch.
When the clutch pedal was released, the engine RPM dropped a little, and to my amazement, the rear hubs started turning at maybe 50-60 RPM! In Neutral! Shut'er down - what's up with that?
Are you SURE it was in neutral? After you shut it down, without touching anything inside the car besides the ignition key, see if you can rotate the tires by hand? I'm thinking your shifter / shift linkage / bushings might be worn/ out of adjustment, and if your like most people, you put it in gear then went to neutral to confirm where you were. I'm guessing it didn't completely pull the trans back into neutral.
I'm positive it was in neutral, checked it three times. That's the state I always leave it in unless on a hill, in neutral with the PB on. And yes, the hubs & half shafts rotate fine by hand.

I would think there'd be enough friction in the drivetrain to keep gears from dragging the mainshaft. Guess not. This can also happen if the synchros aren't retracted all the way.
