I believe you hit on the answer yourself...Check your battery. These cars take an enormous amount of spark to run properly. If your battery is compromised somehow, your car will exhibit the problems you've described. Check your battery terminals, if they're loose or corroded, your car will not idle, stumble under acceleration, and generally sound like it's running of 5 cylinders. How do I know? Happened to me. Now, is this always the case? No, but it's a distinct possibility and an easy place to start. In any case, good luck.
