Default Tips to remove distributor cap/rotor?

I'm still having problems w/ emissions on my 85 (co% double the allowable, plugs read rich also) and started thinking... I've replaced the plugs, wires, o2, checked vacuum as best I could, worked on the cooling system, ran seafoam thru, injector cleaners, etc. etc... and I never checked the distributor cap and rotor.

So, I'm looking at this thing and its sooo tight to the firewall and hood seal, how do you get at those screws in the back?? Whats the trick? Also, is the coil on top of the cap? crazy.

have you tried a nutdriver yet? I did mine yesterday and a nut driver fits in there perfectly. Rich

Push back the seal, use looonng handle screwdriver, and leave screws in the cap. Once all are loose pull cap up while pushing the hood seal back to clearthe cap.

Yeah, use a long handle nutdriver and dont pull the screws all the way out, just loosen them.

Try not to snap off the little plastic snaps on the various wires stuck into the cap. They'll be brittle if the car is that old.

Other than that there arent really any tips.

I use an old 1/4 flex shaft driver. The same one we used to use in the windows on adjustable point distributers. you can still pick them up at swap meets for next to nothing. It snakes right in.
Is your cat good?? My friend had to go with a 3 wire o2 sensor. he hooked up power and ground and o2 lead and no more problem. no matter what he did his counts showed lean and computer kept adding fuel. May not be your problem, just throwing it out.

label the plug wires and the other wires that plug into the driver side prior to removal
