How difficult is it to change the fluid in the OD and the regular transmission? The service manual makes it seem more difficult than I think it should be. Can someone with average skills do this or should I leave it to my mechanic? Also what type of fluid would you recommend? Stick with the Dexron AT fluid or something else?

4speed fluid change is no different than any other manual.
fill it till it comes out the fill hole. This takes 2-3 quarts of 75w90 (or close) gear oil.
For the overdrive remove the pan and filter, replace filter (carefully) and reuse grommet if it's good, otherwise buy a new one of the right rubber material. Don't use a gasket for reinstalling the pan, just rtv. You need to add more than just to the fill hole though. Try filling it either while the car is running on jackstands overdrive (and fluid is being pumped through the system) or just jack the car at an angle to get a little more in.
My other question is do I really need to remove the X brace to change the fluid. I don't really want to go to the trouble of jacking up the car until I make sure I have all the parts/tools taht I'll need.
Thanks
