The Doug Nash transmission from 1984-1988. My car has one.
Basically you have a 4-speed manual transmission, that also has a 2-speed automatic transmission bolted to the back of it. You can utilize the 2-speed in the 2/3/4 gears. You end up having 7 forward gears, it looks like this.....
1st
2nd
2nd/OD
3rd
3rd/OD
4th
4th/OD
..it is pretty cool, I can be crusing along in say 2nd/OD getting great gas mileage, then if I stomp on the gas the 2-speed automatically shifts back down and I'm back in my straight 2nd gear. I get all my torque/hp back and the car accelerates hard!
....lots of people hate it, talk down about it, but if you keep it clean and change the fluids they will last a long time doing what they are supposed to.
Sounds kinda  , but what makes it part manual? Does it use a clutch mechanisim?
Yup, I have all three pedals. You drive the car just like a manual transmission car because it is one. The 2-speed is behind the manual tranny and works on a computer program engaging and disengaging under certain parameters. There is also a button on the top of my shifter so that I can turn it on and off when I want to.
