No sense in buthering a perfectly good L98, Lt1, LT4 or LT5.. I would say a '84 is the ideal year.. plus I think they all had dana 44's and are pretty light!

I think it was the other way around, the '84s all had Dana 36s. Not positive though.

84 would be ideal due to lower cost, but no 84 had the Dana 44. Wouldn't matter for what the OP wants to build anyway though.
I would start with a 85. Remove the ac system and what ever you will never use, need the space for the hair dryer and related pipings. Replace the motor with a built one 383ci or 401ci motor and fitted with a 91.5mm turbo and an aftermarket engine management. And spent a lot of $ to beef up the rear end, suspension, you set to go out racing..... This combo will beat the Big Block N/A setup to death.
85 vette with 420 forged sbc, solid roller cam, dana 44, mini ram, 3500-4000 stall TC non lockup, TH350 or any 3 speed auto tranny, u dont need lockup, Brodix race rite 200cc heads and goes on ......
