Default Reman Dana Questions

How do you remove the yolks from the rear end of a dana 36 ? I can pull a center chunk but the reman units do not come with the yolks in them. Is this a giant p.i.t.a. that requires special tools etc ? I have a buddy who bought a reman dana 36 for his car and I told him I would help him install it. So we're going to have to pull his center and yolks out of it for the reman unit and reinstall. I hope I am calling these by the proper name. I am talking about the pieces that the half shafts bolt to. There is one on either side of the center chunk. Anything we should know about swapping yolks ? Thanks in advance.

Default Side yokes

"side yolks" as you call them will be no problem. A pair of "stout" snap ring pliers will do the job. When you fit the "short axles" or "yokes" you need to check end play. Needs to be .0005 to .0085 The snap rings are selective but builders generally use what they took out. You would like to be on the tighter side of the tolerances.
You "DO NOT" need to remove the roll pin and the differential shaft to get to the snap rings.

Snap ring pliers are what you need. I can lend a hand and snap ring pliers if needed.

I found some good pictures online. Wayne, if you want to lend a hand that would be great. I've never met anyone from the forum before.

Just for what it is worth (not much) yolks are in eggs, yokes are in cars.
The parts you refer to are actually called axle shafts. Those are some stout and PITA snap rings aren't they? I am slowly doing a D36 rebuild and even with Snap-On brand snap ring pliers they are a PITA. Glad you got it done. I am sure you added the GM posi lube additive, but of course you knew that.
