I recently purchased an 87 coupe... I need to change the brakes, but was not given the key for the factory lock nuts.. Is there any way to get a new key and if not what would be my options to get these lock nuts off????
Options are none that I know of, the lug has an adapter that fits the slots on the top of the lug nut. I would check with Chevy parts, Ecklers, Mid-America or Corvette Central maybe they carry the part. If you need it real bad though maybe I'd break down and pay Chevy, you need it in a hurry any way in my opinion. What are you going to do if you get a flat?? you'll really be stuck.
If you were like me, the key was lost, and if you dont really care about the lug nuts, take the car to a good tire shop and they can break them off with a impact wrench.
I'd bet that Chevy could order a new key according to your VIN. Did you look everywhere for it? It is supposed to be in the passenger side rear compartment clipped to the lug wrench.
I also used the hammer and socket method. It was VERY easy to remove the old locks; very fast as well, about two minutes a wheel. Makes you wonder just how incompetent a thief would have to be for the locks to make a difference.
Hammer and socket method makes plenty of noise in the middle of the night.
