Thanks everyone, im ringing up to book a new one in about 5 mins, im 100% sure the one i got now is stuffed, a new one will hopfully do the required .54 - 4.5
Man, i just rang the local chevy guy (one of two or three in state) its gonna cost about $165 bucks Aus for a new one.
ill call my Vette mechanic (only one in state) see if hes got a working secon hand one first.
how much do you guys pay over there in the US?
I think probably $60 - $70 from a Dealer which would be $75 - $85 Aussie these days? It's $49 at the Last Detail - www.tld-corvette.com and I'm sure they'll ship anywhere.
You might just want to look at your throttle cable - particularly if yours is converted to right hand drive. I understand the stock cable doesn't work with the conversion - are you sure the throttle is closing all the way?
yep, throttle is definitely closing the whole way, im in west Aus, so that means conversion isnt compulsory (my cars lhd still with factory cable).
also, my tps does have elongated holes... and it does read to and past
.54 its just, to get there (.54), the tps has to be positioned way out of the limits for the two screws (almost vertical) and the idle screw has to be almost another half inch longer.
im just gona bite the bullet, pay the money for the new one (then i can return it if its stuffed) and prey it all works
ill see if i can get them closer to the $85 dollar mark..... (doent look good)
I'm in the exact same boat as you are, and feel your pain. You might want to check out www.ecklers.com and part #44829 . I just ordered one for myself a couple of days ago to replace my TPS. I looks like it makes it easier to make the adjustment. I'll let you know when it comes in. Price is $55.99us.
Did you try Holden? Maybe the TPS was shared with something that was made there? Doesn't AC Delco maintain an Australian site - www.acdelco.com.au or www.acdelco.com and then click on Worldwide or something like that. Maybe if you took the US part # (213-905) an AC Delco Dealer could cross reference it?
Funny story - I just went thru a similiar episode with my 88. I just had to learn which scale to use on my new digi meter. Check out your instructions manual on your meter and make sure you are using the right setting. I had the same problem. I could not get the TPS adjusted far enough to get to .54. Using the correct scale it came back to about where it had been before testing it so the TPS was tilted slightly down toward the manifold.
holden.... of course, my vette has a number of spliced holden parts in it (im assuming they are typical gm parts) . ive owned a few 5.0 v8 (no 5.7 in early days) litre holdens before, but i dont think they had a similar tps.
my dad was with me when i was doing it, he is an electrican, so im sure his instruments are correct and that we were using the right setting.
The tech tip procedure (note from Ed Heiser above) on adjusting the base idle is pretty good......except it does not have one important step and that is to open the EST connector wire PRIOR to adjusting to the desired RPM. The Helms manual has this step and the author of the tech tip must have missed this important item. Unless you disconnect the EST wire, the ECM will attempt to change the timing and you will not get the correct base idle.
This is in our tech tips section under "other" in the maroon header.
BTW, I bought a "New" TPS that was way off, got a Delco, and it worked perfectly. If yours can't be adjusted to .54, it is junk, get a new one.
I see this is for early, what about late, as in '90. Are they exactly the same?

Have you checked the old TPS, as I outlined in post# 13?
Check it out first of the car as was outlined from CFI, I would also be looking for any "dead"spots (no voltage reading) as you are moving the arm.
Since you twisted the min air screw all the way out, this will need to be re-set to have the TPS voltage adjusted correctly.
At 160. I would think you could call any dealer (dealer price around 47.)here in the states, have it shipped etc. and still come out cheaper then that. my .02
I havnt done what you said in post 13 yet.... but do not worry, i will before i buy a new one, i want to exauhst every option before spending that kind of money.
thanks for the responses everyone, i really appreciate it.
i got home and did what CFI said to do in post 13. my tps seemed to range from 0.0 (closed) to 2.32 (wot).......... which, unless im mistaken, is not correct for a proper functioning tps.
so ive got in contact with my vette doctor and he has a cheaper (by far) second hand one which i will try first.
thanks
my tps seemed to range from 0.0 (closed) to 2.32 (wot).......... which, unless im mistaken, is not correct for a proper functioning tps.
The 0.0, closed, is OK. The WOT should be over 4 volts. Did you have the full 5 volt input during the test? Did your meter move smoothly from one end of the travel to the other?
that 0.0 reading is totally wrong....you are measuring a potentiometer, aka a slidewire...only way to get down to 0.0 is if the slidewire is broken off...completely disconnect the TPS switch from all vehicle wiring and check the OHMS from one outer pin to the other outer pin--should read around 7k ohms (thats 7.xxx if your meter is set on the 20k ohm selector)...if the reading is ''infinity'' your TPS could send a 0.0v signal depending on where the slidewire is broken, but the ecm ain't gonna buy it...keyword here is ''broken'', as in ''broken TPS''
