Default Best source for ZF6 Trans

Mine has a bad 3rd gear synchro, so trying to decide between a rebuild and a new one. Always good to have a spare, right?

Best price I've seen is e-bay fo $1400. I could have sworn they were going pretty cheap last year ($1000). Anyone have a better source?

Thanks!

Check with www.Vette2Vette.com. they are just down the road in Streator...

It would be a used box, but eh...

I hear that GMPartsDirect.com has them cheap. Don't know if they are really rebuilt or new. Its just what I have heard. I have never bought anything from them though.

Thanks guys, Just went on gmpartsdirect: $1030 plus $230 shipping total: $1262.46. Order placed -- now to see if they really have any in stock

I tried the parts store I usually go through and was told they're discontinued, but who knows!

Mine came with the shifter, backup sesnor, cags and was full of oil. It may take 10 days before you get it, I know mine did.

Update: Got a message back from GM Parts Direct (after two weeks) that the part is indeed discontinued and they can't get them anymore.

It was worth a shot, though!

Looks like I'll either be rebuilding mine or paying the extra cash to get the one from e-bay.

If anyone else has any ideas, I certainly appreciate it!

New off Ebay is usually cheaper. I've had bad results on rebuilt, and competent rebuilders are $$$$.

Oh Man that S^cks!!! Now what are we supposed to do if was want to get a complete unit? Rely on used units?

Rebuilding is not too bad if you're replacing little things like syncros and such, but it can get very expensive if you need to replace things like the counter/main shaft, cracked gears...

the only places i know of, as of now and onward is:

1. ebay for a NOS unit someone has lying around.

2. bill bodreau at zfdoc.com, he will sell you a bluetag for $1550 + $250 shipping. he estimates he can do this for about 1 year, then its light out for him too.

3. chris may at superiorchevrolet. as of june 1 2006 they had 10 bluetags left. $1495 + shipping.

forget about blacktags. there ain't no new units. other than the above, the game is pretty much over, for NOS bluetag units.

Man that really bites the big one! I have a black tag and I was hoping that any replacement unit I bought in the future would also be a black tag to I could use the old one for spare parts.

Another thing that sucks is that Keisler (or any other aftermaket tranny maker) does not make a six speed for C4 with ZF6 trannies (89 and up).

What's a ZF6 owner left to do???

just hope that whenever it fails, its only a minor rebuild. on the other hand, wouldn't worry about black tag as far as replacing. the blue tag will handle more than you'll throw at it for street use. contact zfdoc.com -- bill will tell you they're underrated, and will handle much more torque than you think. you don't need to replace with another black tag. and i wouldn't worry about all numbers matching; we're 40 years away from that kind of concern, if EVER.

What's the T56 rated at? I doubt it's as strong as a ZF6... But probabbly alot cheaper though...

I would go with a TKO 600, higher TQ rating and NO pull clutch.

Although the TKO-600 is a 5spd, its a nice tranny. But what I don't understand is why it does not include C4 passed 1988 in their "Perfect Fit" kit. Its probabbly because Zf6 car has a diffent bellhousing and driveshaft.

I think it is more of a 4+3 replacement kit really, but that would not stop me from dropping into a 89-96

I found an excellent seller on ebay that has all sorts of things for vettes including NEW ZF6s! I think they were about $1388. Great shipping on my parts. Google partsladi, on ebay.
