Default Dex-cool in a C4?

Can I use the Prestone GM Dex-Cool approved extended life orange antifreeze in my 86 L98 C4? Or will this mess things up? Should I just stick with the regular old green?

I would stick to what your car was designed to run, the green. Unless you can totally flush all out all the green, the orange will turn to mud.

Stick to the green. DexCool turned to orange sludge in mine.

Dumb question...does the Prestone bottle state "orange" or "Dex-Cool" somewhere on the outside? Bottle is opaque...how do I know I'm getting the green coolant?

Actually, the last Prestone I bought will work with any color coolant.

Default Dex-Cool ????

I'm not real fond of Dex-Cool in any of my vehicles. I have seen a lot of intake manifold leaks occur. I have had little or no trouble out of the green coolant. However, DO NOT MIX the different coolants. If you can completely flush the cooling system out with water, then you should be able to use what ever you like. Rember to use 50/50 mix or use distilled water in with your full strenght coolant.

Be aware that there is a class action lawsuit pending against Dex-Cool. A lot of engine damage claims for the stuff. Whether its true or not, I don't know for certain.

I drained all the green out of my '94 until the water flowed clear enough to see the bottom of the bucket I was using to catch it. Dex-cool and distilled water has worked great. I have consistant 196 to 198 temps on the road and a max so far of 211 (observed) in traffic on a 93 degree temp day. I did not put the GM tablets in after the refill and life has been good. Do what makes you feel comfortable and is within your capabilities. Good Luck!
