Default AC compressor/clutch

Does anybody know what air conditioning compressors will interchange with an 88? Are there any later model Harrison/Rochester units that will work or do I need to stay with the Nippindenso? The clutch started to smoke on mine a few years back and I think it took the front bearing with it, when it engages it makes a horrible noise. Is it possible to change the clutch assembly out with the compressor still in the car? It is still charged with R12 and used to blow cold until the clutch problem. I'm trying to decide if I should just change the clutch or change out the complete compressor and change over to R134. Any thoughts?

Yes the clutch can be replaced with the compressor on the car. not too bad of a job. Watch out for one of the snap rings inside the clutch, it fits in a tapered groove in the compressor shaft. I got my clutch from Advance Auto Parts

Most of the Discounters sell the Factory-Aire Brand and I think I forked over a $150 once for a new assembly. It fits and works, but the hub has a different look, so it all depends on how close you want to match the factory appearence. It does come with the shims and I think new snap rings. The OEM doesn't include anything and you have to squander another 15 Bucks to get the shims. It's about a Deuce and a Quarter - try the Last Detail - www.tld-corvette.com
