Default Need help with motor swap

One of my friends has an 87 TPI vette. He wants me to swap in a carbuerated motor....i know its not logical but he's paying me to do it. Now for the hard part....can i use the ignition system thats in the car and how do i keep the digital dash and stuff like that? Basically i want to know what i need to do to keep the car working correctly without a TPI motor...i hope this makes sense, if you need me to clarify anything just ask and ill do my best. Thanks in advance.

Get a four barrel intake and a carburetor and put it on.

I can almost promise you you should take mackeys word for this one. I have NO experience, but I imagine if you got an L98 long block and put a four barrel and intake on, the car would function fine. There are guys on here running very similar setups. However, that said, and knowing abosolutly nothing on the subject Ill sit down and shut up, but just keep renewing the topic and your bound to get your answer.

You won't need to connect the harness that goes to the injectors or the air temp sensor, or the Knock sensor or the IAC sensor or the O2 sensor. You will have to use the oil temp sensor wire that is near the oil filter and the oil pressure wire that is at the drivers side rear of the intake manifold. You will need to connect the water temp wire that is on passenger side near spark plug 6 and 8. Not sure on your year, but you will also have to use the wire that sends a signal to the fans to turn on, or get one of those fan kits from corvette central or eklers. The wire from the distributor to the tach is essential too. I would also talk to one of the chip burners (fomato or ed Wright or TPIS) to find out if you need a custom chip to make the computer continue to talk to the driver info center (warning lights) and avoid a whole load of error codes flashing at driver constantly. The Transmission wires talk to miles per hour on the dash. That is as much as I know. Good Luck.

Jonvolk,
There's a number of guys here on the forum that have swapped their tpi for a carb. (I'm thinking about doing it also) You may want to re-post your question so the header says something like "need help with tpi to carb swap" or something. I know there's a few guys here that will be happy to give you more info, but may have skipped over your posting.
My questions are if I can use the stock fuel pump, what pressure regulator to use, and what kind of clearance is left for an air cleaner. I really don't think it would be that difficult.

Thanks,
Carl :chevy

Have your friend look into Pepsi can's, they are much cheaper and basically the same technology.

Another good point with Pepsi can's is they already come polished, so that will save even more money.

I bet you could shove 1100 CFM through there on a naturally aspirated motor.

I doubt the distributor will work because its computer controlled and the computer needs the throttle position sensor to decide how to set the spark advance. When the throttle plates are closed, the computer uses a different table to set the spark advance.

Fuel injection is more difficult to get working but you get better mileage, throttle response and spark control.

When all is said and done: Fuel injection renders you more power....but it's been said that when you design the perfect fuel injection system, you'll have a carbueretor. Good luck! :flag

Depends on that cabs you go for. We sell carbs that run in the $1500+ range. That is not even the high end carb! But these carbs sit on the fastest pro stock trucks in the world!!! (PRC(Performance racing carbs) in Houston).
You will not be able to keep the computer without custom building some simulators for certain things. Put a custom dash in it and be done with it.
Good Luck. If you have alotted any less that a month with this project....
