Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these coils.
What happens when they go out? My Vette, 1990 is having trouble.
It doesn't stay on. It seems to want to idle very low and then turns
off. If alternator is plugged the car won't start. The fuel pump is working. after sitting almost a week the car started and ran good for
almost a mile until it died again. Now it's in the same shape when it
wouldn't start. Can anyone here save this Vette's life?
It sure sounds like you ignition module has taken a dump! You'll need to pick one up and install it! Do you have any trouble codes on the Vette? This will also help us to direct you to the source of thee problrm!
But again it sounds as if it's the ignition module!
I replaced the ignition module and had no change. I do appreciate your
comments. This has been very frustrating. I know I am getting fuel.
I also replaced the alternator because when I unplugged the harness it
would stay on. After replacing the alternator it still has the same problem. I am hoping someone knows how to trace to wires and will
suggest what wire to trace that may be causing this.
Your ignition coil is sitting on the top of your distributor cap. The pick up coil is down inside your distributor, and it has to be pulled to access it. Pick up coils rarely go bad, although it's not unheard of.

Thanks again
Of course the car is going to keep running with the alternator unplugged. With the alternator unplugged, the car is using the battery for the power source. Your battery really has very little function, once the car is started/running. The battery works in tandem with the alternator. If you have a good alternator, you can disconnect the battery while the car is running, and the car will stay running.
I think you need to troubleshoot the problem. It sounds like you're spending money in the wrong places.
You can check both using an ohm meter, when checking the pickup coil part of the test is wiggling the wires. That said, it sounds like a heat sensitive issue-which leads us back to the ICM, when you installed it did you coat the bottom with the grease normally supplied?
