I have a '96 LT1 auto which makes a weird sound while cranking. In the last 3 months it did it twice. It sounds like slight backfire or starter
banging into the flywheel as it engages. I know I am not giving you much to go on but any thought on where to begin. It really doesnt happen often enough to duplicate....car has 65k miles
It sounds as if the flexplate has a jacked up tooth! Same thing happened on my Chevelle and turned out to be the flexplate and it also jacked up the starter gear! Thus making that aweful noise! Check the teeth on both of these bad boy's and let us know what you find!
