Several vendors sell a "Catalytic Converter Insulator. Rear" for L98 C4s. Where does it go? What does it do? I'm guessing it insulates something, but what? Is this same as a "Catalytic Converter Flange Gasket"?
Just posting this on the chance that somebody might know...
Perhaps to insulate the floor from the heat of the main cat?
That sounds like a reasonable assumption. Mine has a thin plate above it.
Gasket for the flange would be where it bolts up to the rest of the system. The '85 model has a flange at either end.

Correct. No front cats. The cat has a heat shield that attaches to some small brackets that attach to the 4-bolt flanges. Also, the front Y pipe clamp has a small sort of heat shield over it at the front of the cat.
I didn't think GM used any gaskets on the 4-bolt flanges (or any of the exhaust connections after the head). But if there is some, I'd like one.
Do you want me to look for mine? theres a chance I still have some of these parts.
Do you still have all the parts that were taken off your car?
You should have two sections of that heat shield that was above your cat. One big piece that covered just about the whole thing, and a smaller piece that bolts to the rear flange, and (If I'm remembering right) to the hanger.
I can't say for sure though, it's been a while since I had mine apart. But that's what my guess would be at that piece.

Yes, please!
CC goes off on another wild goose chase for restoration issues he would never have to worry about if he hadn't been nice to j3studio in the first place

Ah, so the thought is that the flange is different from the insulator - thanks, Joe!
The 84-5's used a "square' CAT and there are gaskets (insulators?) on both ends.
Would these gaskets/insulators be between (for example) the cat flange and the rear Y-pipe flange? If so, my cat's gaskets/insulators were long gone by the time we started disconnecting components last weekend...
