I was idling at a light and my car stalled. I have a C4.It did it again today. It will start idling noticably then all the oil pressures and temp drop and the car stalls. When I got my oil changed last time along with a tune up my car freaked out because they ran the spark plugs incorrectly and burned them out. When I told the mechanic what happened the first thing he said is that my oil pump must have gone out and quoted me this insane price. When he actually looked into it he found that he ran the plugs incorrectly and fixed it. If I tell him the symptoms precipitating the stall he will definately jump at the dead oil pump idea(he is dying to replace that thing) but what if he is more convinced of the price then of the problem. What do you guys think it is?
Wow.. if your car stalled because your oil pressure went to low, that's a bad sign. Did it make any odd noises when it stalled, or was it just like someone cut the ignition to it?
Your car could stall if the oil pressure dropped because the fuel pump shuts off when the oil pressure drops below a certain level. Engine can also stall if it seizes but it won't restart either. Its possible to restart the car because the oil pressure switch is bypassed during restart. Once the car is restarted you should not be getting oil pressure if your oil pump has died. The temp dropping is really peculiar. I wonder if the fusable lead (this is a separate wire that comes from the + terminal on the batter) from the battery to the electrical system is flakey. Check your battery terminals for corrosison and see if that wire looks okay.
I plan on finding a new mechanic =) Im young and a female and all he sees is dollar signs. Anyway there is no noise at all it just stalls 1 minute it is running the next it isnt. Yes it does start right back up no problem at all like nothing happened. I'll almost tempted to bring it to the dealership. I have a warrentee so if its major it will be covered anyways.
Does it stall only when the AC is turned on or will it do it with the AC off. Mine will die at idle with the AC "on" from time to time. I think it is because the IAC doesn't move quickly enough.
Did you mean they burned up the sparkplug wires by routing them incorrectly? That would be a sign of shoddy work.
I would say try changing the oil filter and oil again, along with making sure the wires are on correctly....at a different shop.
Just hope they didn't so something stupid like start it with no oil in it at the first shop...that will cause your bearings to go bad...meaning a rebuild is needed.
Quick oil change shops are famous for doing that to people...they hire the stupidest idiots out there who will work for minimum wage because no one else will hire them.

Re: Why did my car stall (Sadistka)
Sounds like an electrical problem. I would disassemble the battery connections (positive most likely) and clean, clean clean. If not that then other major elctrical connections and common grounds on the 96. The bad point would have to be common to both the ecm and the instrument panel, or perhaps fuel pump and and instrument panel. You may be able to reduce the trail even more by seeing / remembering anything else that also shut off at the same time it stalled.
Good Luck, it does not sound remotely like your oil pump. If it is the battery connection, check for signs of acid leaking around the positive terminal - you may also have to replace the battery.
