Default Gains from gears?

Hey all. I'am considering doing a set of 4.10 gears for my 93 M6. Is it really that big of a SOTP (seat of the pants) feel over my 3.45's? What kind of gains could I expect? I am pretty much stock now and It went 13.2 @ 104 with a 2.08 60' spinning) I would also get a performance tune with it as well. will that add to the feel or just fix my speedo? I will probablly have tom from Anger Management do them if anyone knows them.
Thanks alot!
Jared

Yes it is a big SOTP feeling. My friends 95 went from 12.7 to 12.1 with a gear change only. He did have a Hot Cam, no headers. Went from 3.45 to 4.1. His highways fuel economy went up to, because 6th gear was actually usefull.

I don't think gas mileage goes up. At least it didn't for me. At 75mph my engine now turns 1800 rpm when it used to be like 1250 rpm. But you do have a useful 6th gear as Steve40th said. It is by far the cheapest, single biggest SOTP mod you can do. I did mine (including installation) for $650. I took .4 of sec off of my car in the 1/4 mile. It too is my favorite mod.

Do you guys think it is a good mod for a L98 with 6 speed. I have a 3.54 now and as you say 6th isn't that usefull.

your car was crippled at birth by gm's "no gas guzzler tax'' edict, CAFE fleet fuel comsumption restrictions, and a mild DETUNE to control warranty costs, and more....there are definite improvements that you can make, but durability may be affected, particularly by ''tuners'' that are ready to go too close to the 'ragged'' edge (knowing that when it breaks, they won't be paying to fix it--you will)

look , learn, before you leap

Probably get a tenth or two. 4.10-perfect gear for 6 speed.

you're spinning now .....and you want 4.10s? maybe just for drag racing?...what the hell I know! I would leave my rear alone for a DD!

No, too much gear for a nearly stock L98.

4.10 gears work even better in a daily driver. No loss of gas mileage, better accelleration, and 6th gear becomes useful.

His tires are the problem....or the track prep sux. I get easy 1.8s on every street tire I've owned and I have factory gearing. I know for sure I would greatly benefit at the strip with 4.10s. I'm having to drop the clutch at 4k, no slipping the clutch at all.

Thats great! My 93 auto and 3.73 spins 2800 rpms at 75 mph. I take it thats because of the 6th gear your able to keep those rpms down?

Probably the most noticeable mod you can do, and cheap too (compared to just about anything else. MAYBE 10% less mpg at 80mph. But the downside is you probably are going to develop traction "issues".

I'm running the 3.45s with the ZF and find the 6th gear to be fine on the highway and excellent mpg, although I usually drive 80+ mph.

Look at your trap speed, and figure out what RPM you're comfortable with there. You don't want to have to shift into 5th gear at the strip.

bobmic93, you are correct, the six speed is keeping the rpms within reason. Jared1984, traction is always going to be an issue, but that is workable. I consistently run 1.6 60' times on street tires, but I have to do an idle to 1500rpm launch because otherwise I'll go up in smoke. With a stock motor to mildly modded motor, you should be going through the traps in 4th. After my last mod, it pushed me into having to shift into 5th. Currently, I am going through the traps at 111mph, so that would give you an idea on when you will have to shift.

What's a good gear for an L98 auto? I got a spakin new D44 w/3.54's ready to install. Can't wait to get to the track and finally be able to spin my BFG drag radials, which I couldn't do w/the pathetic 2.59's it came with. I intend to short shift into second because of the HUGE difference in the 1st and 2nd gears in the 700R4. Then cranking it up close to 5k going into 3rd. Anyone have this setup? The only mods right now are frisbee removal, lower thermostat, Dewitt rad. Soon to come are either Hookers or TPiS w/ true duals from Random Tech. Muffler choice is still up for grabs, so to speak. Am thinking of Flowmaster Delta 40's w/ZR1 tips welded on, but don't know if they will be a direct bolt-on (keeping the same hangers that is). Anyone running a similar system?

Rich K

P.S. I hate the Flowmaster Delta 50's because of the longish, skinny tips, so I will need to use an offset 2 1/2" inlet/dual outlets. I read a post by someone on here that did this type of mod, but can't find it to inquire which mufflers he used. Any help appreciated.

Actually Im going through the traps in 3rd at 114 mph (my best) but my rpms are at 6000 at that point and my hp curve pulls to 6300.

Irishpilot, you have the same mods as me listed in your sig, but I don't have gears. I also run through the traps at 111ish. What are your quarter mile times with the gears?

I don't think that's the answer, the point would be to keep the RPM drop less between 1-2.
