Default 85 Exhaust Question

I have a 85 model. The exhaust is in need of replacing. I don't see that many options for the 85. What would it take to change the whole thing over to the 86 - 91? I see what looks like dual cats towards the front of the exhause to where mine has one cat in the middle. Would this cause a hook up problem? Is that a resonator on the 86 up in the middle where my cat is? It seems like everytime that I see an exhaust that interests me, they only have it for the 86 and up. I am in California, so I have to worry about the smog check. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks all.

I don't have an '85, but I don't care for the full systems for my '89 so I am doing it piecemeal which is coming out less money anyway. Your front Y doesn't have cats so you probably wouldn't want to go to a system with precats. I would go to www.summitracing.com and search by your specific car. They should have a hi-flow cat, rear y pipe with crossover, and mufflers for your 1985.

That isn't a resonator in the middle of an '86, where your cat is. It is a third cat. The biggest differences in the '85 and '86 exhaust systems, is the dual pre-cats, that started in 1986, and the method of attaching the main cat to both the front and rear "Y" pipes. If you are replacing everything in the exhaust system, the complete 1986 will fit and work on your 1985. The problems come with the compatibility of the exhaust pieces with one another, from one year to the next, not their compatibility with the car.

RACE ON!!!

Only difference between your catback on 85 and the 86-91 cars is the way it hooks to the cat. Otherwise its the same catback. Any shop can weld it right up for you.

If you want to change to later systems, just replace the main cat.
