Always post what year vette you are asking help for!!!! They aren't all alike.
Most likely you have a VATS problem. First try your spare ign key as its pellet contacts aren't worn like your everyday key. Unplug the clutch safety switch and jump the socket. Put a voltmeter on the jumper wire and ground and hit, "crank" on the ign sw. If you have 12v and no cranking, then your problem is with the starter or battery. If you don't have 12v, then you have a problem with the VATS circuit. Remove the hush panel above the drivers feet and find the two wires from the steering column that go to a 2 pin socket. Unplug, connect an ohmeter to the wires from the column, insert your ign key. You should measure the same resistance as the pellet. If over 13k ohms, then you need a new ign tumbler/lock which will have new contacts that make with the pellet. You can temporarily bypass VATS by connecting a fixed resistor the same value as your pellet across the 2 pin socket from the wiring harness (this goes to the VATS module). You can use a 1/4 watt 5% resistor from Radio Shack. Don't permanently bypass VATS because 99% of thefts are done by bashing the column and jumping the ign.

I was looking at the car some more and so the car starts the first couple tries then the security light comes on and it won't start. Also I don't have a spare key to try so I will just get another one but how do you find out what resistance your key is.

As cheap as the keys are ($3.25) why don't you have an extra?
