You can read codes by using a paper clip in the ALDL, lot's of posts on here about how to do it. If you want to get the best tool for diagnostic work look on EBAY for a GM TECHLINE TECH1 or 1A scanner. They usually go for $300.00 +/-. The Techline is the tool called out in the Factory Service Manual. The scanner uses Cartridges for different years of cars and different systems on the car, you can get a MASS STORAGE CARTRIDGE that will cover every system in all GM OBD1 cars
