Torque Converter Question
Hey guys,
I had my tranny over-hauled about a month ago. The mech talked me into spending more $$$ for a performance torque converter rather than a replacement stock unit. Forgive this dumb question, but what does a perf.unit do that's above and beyond a regular unit? Thanks guys.
He most likely put a higher stall converter in your car, which means that the rpm's it engages is higher then stock. Saying it's high performance means very little thou... I'd be calling him up and finding some spec's out on it.
It will make your car come out of the hole a little faster, or cause more tire spin... will hurt your gas mileage a bit too.
I would definately do it. I cant remember the stall on the 86... But actually I think it is quite high. Vigilante makes the best converter on the market, a decent stall of about 2600 as well as higher torque multiplication of 3:1 I believe.... It will make a very big difference. Ask if your mechanic could get you a Vigilante, either way though, an aggresive stall will be nice.
