I just upgraded my rear differential to 3.54 gears with the Dana 36 carrier. I had 3.07, but I really like the difference i get with the 3.54. Someone suggested that I also look at upgrading to a new torque converter for more performance. Does anyone know if this would make sense? I dont want to blow out my Dana 36 which I know is not that robust. Thanks.
A TC isnt going to make the rear blow out. What it can do is add heat to the transmission, wearing it out sooner. A separate cooler would always be a good idea, even if you left the stock TC in there.
You should do it, it will probably make as big a difference as adding the gears have. 2400-2600 stall would be good.
I have 3.54 dana 36 too with 9.5" 3000 stall Lockup TC bought from transmissionhead.com. Trust me i love it from a stop light, launches like a rocket, with timing advance its says from a stop light "get out a my way".
But the disad is between 30-35 mph speed in 4th gear it lugs feels loose, but once i crossed 45 mph speed in OD i have no problem. I do have 4th gear only lock up kit and also have transgo Shift kit. Hope this helps.
I do have TC cooler and oil as well:

If you drag race, the converter, alone, would have done more for your ETs than the gear, alone. The combination ought to be killer.
it is real easy for other people to spend my money on my car by saying"you should....." drive the car for a while.if you are happy with it leave it alone.if you want a"little more"then a tc is the next step.just don't go crazy.like vader said 2400-2600 would give you a leap out of the hole.the biggest tranny cooler you can fit is usually the first mod i do to an auto trans car when i get it.

I agree with the others. Somewhere between 2200-2500 would give a nice seat of the pants gain, lower et a bit, make minimal added heat and make the car much more fun to drive. I would advise agains a TCI or B&M converter. I am lucky enough to have a somewhat local shop hand build them for me to whatever approx stall I request. They do a fantastic job. Maybe you have someone local that could do the same thing.
