8000 is overkill. I lean toward every 30,000 miles. Purchased my car with 50,000 and pretty sure it never had been changed-I think that will be true with many non-dealer/no enthusiast maintained cars unless a problem arises.
I don't know what the factory service manual shows.
Is replacement of the filter straight forward? I've changed the oil on my LT4 several times and never bothered looking for the fuel filter! Any special procedure to replace it?
Its on the passenger side on the frame just behind the cowl. The tough part is to get it out without taking a bath in gasoline. I replace mine after the car sat overnight. I releived the fuel pressure in the fuel rail and then took off the cap on the fuel tank. You'll need a couple different wrench sizes, 10 mm socket, pan fo the gas and safety glasses to keep the fuel out of your eyes.
Before you put the new filter in, blow through it and then do the same once the old one is off. That will give you an idea of how much pressure is lost in the filter.
GM is Full of sh_t when they tell you it dosen't need servicing. 25K is probably a good service interval.
I just changed mine this morning for the first time (50K miles). Man-o-Man, we ought to start a club for those that have done this themselves. I feel as though I have been initiated. What a pain on that top connection. No leaks,....yet. What tricks did you guys use on that top connection? All I had was a small adjustable that could get to it? :smash:
The only trick is to wedge a wrench on the top line and turn the filter from the bottom. I was thrilled to discover that the connections on mine had small dabs of loc-tite. This made breaking the top connection lose oh so much fun. :U
