Wiring - Dash shorting out
I have a 1986 Corvette Coupe with removable one piece roof. I am just getting the car back and planning on restoring it. It was parked for about 2 yrs. now and in need of minor repairs.
I am wondering if anyone out there has had wiring issues with their dash. Mine has severe problems. Sometimes while driving down the road and you hit a bump, the whole dash lights go out, maybe you hit another bump and it comes on again. I know there is a short someplace but have no idea to go about finding it. A couple people have mentioned they have the same problem but yet to find someone that knows how to do it?
any help?
Thanks,
Beth
The cluster has two circuit boards that plug together via a single row of pins on the front board into a socket on the rear board (as the driver would view them). The end pin closest to the center of the circuit board carries the lamp current that back illuminates the LCD (liquid crystal display) panels and this current through an age relaxed spring on the socket (connection resistance) causes enough heat to unsolder the pin on the front board causing intermittent back lighting. The cure is to solder a short insulated small piece of hookup wire from the pin to the socket. Resoldering the pin will not cure this problem. I did this to my cluster about 10 years ago with no further problems and I drive my 87 everyday.

The dash grounds to the bellhousing bolt above the oil filter.
