Default [1985] Part QUestion

I've got a simple (i think) part question for you guys.

I need to replace the pulley on my belt tensioner. I went to Napa, bought the pulley they said was for my '85- it was a smooth pulley (no lip to hold the belt in place). I questioned them at the time, but I didnt have my pulley with me, so I wasn't sure.

I finally got home and compared the two, and they are the same size, but the one I got from Napa has no ridge on it. It's just a smooth sided pulley. The original one on my '85 has ridges on either side of the pulley, I assume to hold the belt in place.

Is what they gave me right? Don't they make the OEM style pulley? Or did the idiot at Nappa screw up (again)?

Default No ridge

The after market pulleys do not have the ridge on the side of the pulley that the OEM has. I have been running the ridgeless pulley on my 85 for about two years without problems.

You can pull the bearing out of the old pulley and replace it if you have a real bearing house in your area. They should be able to sell you a new bearing for a lot less than the after market pulley thru NAPA.

Thanks for the reply. I thought about just replacing the bearing, but the pulley itself has been worn down, so that's not really an option.

I'll have to post some pictures of just how bad my idler pulley is. I've never seen this much play in a pulley before. But... I'm positive I found the source of the ugly noise eminating from the front of my engine.

Mikey, I believe the pulley you got from NAPA should be fine.
